Discover Fargoya Village
Fagoya Village, located in the Ngorama Chiefdom of Kono District, Sierra Leone, is a community rich in cultural heritage and history. The district, often dubbed the “Diamond District” for its renowned diamond mines, significantly contributes to the nation’s economy. Fagoya thrives on agriculture and artisanal mining, with its landscape adorned by cocoa and coffee plantations that reflect the industrious nature of its people. Traditional huts made of mud and thatch further enhance the village’s serene and picturesque environment.
Despite its central location, just 3 kilometres from the chiefdom’s headquarters town, Kangama Ngorama, Fagoya faces immense challenges. Basic social amenities remain scarce, such as clean drinking water, healthcare facilities, electricity, proper sanitation, and schools. Moreover, the 16 neighbouring villages—including Mwaemandu, Bunabu, Taimbada, Njopong, Dawadu, and others—share the same struggles, relying on a single stream as their water source. This stream, unfortunately, is polluted due to improper waste disposal, making it unsafe for drinking and contributing to the community’s health risks.
With a population of approximately 500 residents across the Fagoya Community, including women, children, elderly individuals, and persons with disabilities, access to clean water is a critical and urgent need.
The construction of a borehole in Fagoya would provide safe water for its residents and benefit the surrounding villages, improving the quality of life and reducing waterborne diseases.

Background of Project
Access to clean and safe drinking water has been a persistent challenge for the Fagoya community in Kangama Ngorama Chiefdom, Kono District. Recognizing the critical need to address this issue, our initiative proposes the construction of a bore hand pump well at an estimated cost of $8,850. The project will be funded through contributions from both internal and external donors, as well as humanitarian organizations committed to improving water access in underserved communities.
The anticipated bore hand pump well will have a transformative impact on the residents of Fagoya, providing safe and reliable access to clean drinking water and addressing some of their immediate water needs. However, the growing demand for clean water continues to outpace the current supply. This highlights the urgent need to construct a new well, ensuring that the Fagoya community and its surrounding villages can meet their water requirements adequately and sustainably.
This initiative aims to significantly improve the health and well-being of the Fagoya community by delivering a dependable solution to its water scarcity issues.
Purpose of The Project
To create a sustainable supply of clean water in Fagoya and its neighboring Community Kangama Ngorama Chiefdom Kono District, Sierra Leone.
To reduce water-borne diseases among the people of the Fagoya community.
To enlighten the indigenes of Fagoya on the importance of clean water.
To provide clean water to the school children of the Fagoya community.
To educate the indigenes on how to carry out healthy household treatment and storage procedures relating to clean water sustainability.
To increase the overall availability, accessibility, sanitation, and hygiene of water in these Communities.
Ensuring overall health and a better life for the people of the Fagoya community.

Major Activities of the Project
1. Community Mobilization:
-
- The community will be actively involved in all stages of the project implementation.
- Meetings will be conducted with the community in the center requesting water support. During these meetings, the project plan and conditions—including community contributions, the formation of a Water Maintenance Fund (WMF), and a Wells Monitoring Committee (WMC)—will be explained.
- The meetings aim to raise awareness and prepare the community for participation, including their role in mobilizing funds to support future pump repairs.
2. Formation of Wells Monitoring Committees (WMC):
-
- AWMC will be formed in Fagoya village, consisting of 10 members from the local community.
- The WMC will be responsible for maintaining and repairing hand pumps, overseeing their daily care, and managing the Water Maintenance Fund.
3. Establishment of a Water Maintenance Fund (WMF):
-
- This fund will be organized by the community and will consist of contributions from residents.
- The WMF will ensure sustainable management, maintenance, and repair of the hand pumps.
4. Procurement and Transportation of Building Materials:
-
- Construction materials will be purchased and transported to the project site as soon as funds are received.
5. Well Construction:
-
- Wells will be dug to a depth of 30–40 meters, ensuring access to a reliable and clean groundwater source.
- Professional water technicians will carry out the construction work to ensure quality and efficiency.
